چکیده

In this paper we examine changes in dollar and relative bid-ask spreads of stocks following large price movements. We investigate large increases and decreases separately and link our results to current market microstructure theories on trading activities and spreads. We also look at changes in volume and selling pressure to interpret the changes in trading activity. Our results show that the market reacts differently to price increases and decreases. For large price decreases, trading increases on the sell side even when spreads have increased. For large price increases, trading increases on the buy side during a period of higher spreads. However, the increases in dollar spreads and price pressure are most pronounced at the end of trading day. Our results are consistent with microstructure models that link trading activities and costs to the level of asymmetric information. © 1999 Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois. If returns are stationary, then the risk of an asset in any time frequency can be estimated from the risk of the asset in any other time frequency through a simple linear rescaling. This implies that short-term risk carries reliable information about long-term risk, and both data frequencies and investment horizons are irrelevant when evaluating an asset’s risk. However, most series of stock re...

Insiders trade not only because they have private information about their companies but also because of other exogenous reasons. Therefore, it is important to control for exogenous trading needs in empirical studies regarding insider trading. Lee (1997) shows that insider trading is not closely related to the long-term performance of primary seasoned equity offering firms. This paper examines w...

Meeting Times of Random Walks on Graphs

We prove an upper bound on the meeting time of an arbitrary number of random walks in any connected undirected graph in terms of the meeting times of fewer random walks. We show that the bound is tight for rings, and that it is both stronger and more general than a bound suggested by Tetali and Winkler [4].

In this paper I discuss in what way, if any, the collapse of Argentina’s experience with a currency board has affected the policy debate on the appropriate exchange rate regime in emerging and transition countries. More specifically, I deal with three issues: (1) I discuss some important aspects of the Argentine experience; (2) I provide a comparative evaluation of economic performance under st...

We investigate the application of a novel relevance ranking technique, cover density ranking, to the requirements of Web-based information retrieval, where a typical query consists of a few search terms and a typical result consists of a page indicating several potentially relevant documents. Traditional ranking methods for information retrieval, based on term and inverse document frequencies, ...
